Eruption

Eruption

from 80.00

It took a mere three minutes for the May 18th, 1980 volcanic explosion of Mt Saint Helens to incinerate 225 square miles of the surrounding forest; enough trees to construct 300,000 single family homes! The power within the eruption caused the entire North facing portion of the mountain to displace, causing miles of Lahars, or volcanic mudflows that yielded to nothing in their paths. The remnants of destruction and magnitude of the eruption are still seen today from many of the gorgeous viewpoints along the Spirit Ridge Highway, including the famous Johnston Ridge Observatory. Known mostly for their destructive natural powers, volcanic eruptions produced by plate tectonics are theorized to have played a crucial role in the creation of the conditions necessary for life to form here on our planet: from melting the 3km thick ice casing the mantle of our Earth Billions of years ago, to the massive lightning storms created during eruptions that helped produce the proper chemical reactions for aminos acids, which are the building blocks for organic life. Nature, and life, are full of these little ironies.
